I prefer the final one with all the bricks cropped out. But I am trying to get the black border out too, I think it is distracting and is too easily confused with the photograph.
Regarding borders on photographs, I just got back for an exhibit of 1880-1920 platinum prints at the National Gallery West Wing. Many of the photographers took great care selecting their mats and borders, just as with framing a painting. Some of the borders were designed, and many had artwork in them as well. They complemented the photographs, both by having colors that complemented the prints, or textures that highlighted the airy nature of the photographs.
